Tanita BC-1000 Ant+ Wireless Body Composition Package Review

Tanita BC-1000 Ant+ Wireless Body Composition Package
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Was skeptical. But i want to be very concious of my health (currently overweight) and wanted data to help guide me as to my real fitness, and be able to track progress against goals. This scale seems to be very accurate compared against manual measurement methods. Except, I do not need to manually do anything, just step on the scale, and the data is sent to the software application (from compeitive edge with ANT). It does everything for you.
This isnt the lazy way, as doing body fat, BMI, bone density, hydration levels, etc would take a long time to do, and you would have to manually enter all of that data to track it. HIGHLY recommend this product for anyone serious about weight management and fitness levels.

HoMedics SC-505 Body Fat Analyzer And Scale Review

HoMedics SC-505 Body Fat Analyzer And Scale
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this scale at a local store and brought it home. I stepped on it for the first time, and found I was 13 lbs heavier than I had been just that morning! On subsequent tries I could never get it to give me the same weight twice and the variations were not small (sometimes 2 lbs, sometimes 10 or more). My husband tried it an experienced the same problem. It was also hard to set it up and make it work, it wouldn't always weigh you when you stepped on it and would often give an "error" message. All in all, quite possibly the worst scale I have ever tried. I promptly returned it.

Taylor 5596G Body fat-Body Water Scale with Bone and Muscle Mass Features Review

Taylor 5596G Body fat-Body Water Scale with Bone and Muscle Mass Features
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I had tried several scales before I got my hands on the Taylor 5596G. This scale tells your weight, body fat, body water, bone mineral, muscle mass - and is less than half as much as a competitor! I am just SO impressed with this scale.
First, the basics. This scale is very simple to set up and use. For the first two memory spots, it's even one-touch operation - just hit the toggle up for person 1, down for person 2. Then you stand on the scale, it sends a mild electrical signal through your feet (you can't feel it) and voila! All your stats are shown.
If you haven't used a scale like this before, you really should give it a try. These types of electrical scales are very popular now and work very well. If you're not sure how they work, drop me a line and I can explain it in detail. Suffice it to say in this review that yes they DO work, based on your body's conductiveness.
So OK, taking it as a given that the technology should work well, does it work well here? I am happy to answer that with a resounding YES. The reason I got this scale is that my previous purchase - a competitor's scale at a much higher price - did NOT work accurately. It gave fat percentage numbers which were wildly off. It made me worry that a scale didn't exist that provided fat numbers with water and muscle mass numbers. However my fears were assuaged with this purpose.
I compared the fat numbers of this machine with the five other fat testing devices we have here. This Taylor scale was right on. In test after test it came up with the exact same numbers as the other devices. I am very satisfied with it.
As far as weight goes, pretty much all scales are good at that at this point :) I can put my 3 scales side by side and they all come up with the same numbers within a pound. So that part is fine.
My tests with the other values - water, muscle mass etc - also show that this scale is accurate.
It really is so important to have a scale that shows you your fat and water percentages. Let's say you are 150 pounds and little of that is fat. You could be in super shape. Let's say you are 150 pounds and 99% of that is fat - you could be in awful shape! Your weight alone tells you very little. You need to know how much of that is excess fat, and how much is healthy muscle.
Water is critical because your body needs to be properly hydrated to work properly. Most people do not drink nearly enough water in a given day. If your body dries out, you get sick more frequently, it's harder to lose weight, and harder just to have energy to do things. You need to keep track of your body hydration levels.
I also am really happy that this scale has a muscle mass indicator. Whether you are walking steps, biking, hiking or anything else, building lean muscle is an important part of staying healthy. This isn't so you look like Conan!! It is so your body is limber enough to climb stairs safely, to maintain your balance without falling and breaking bones. Every human needs muscle to be healthy. This scale helps you keep track of yours.
Are there downsides to this scale? Well, the "indicators" of what you are being shown are rather small. It flashes the numbers one after another. So it's not that you look at the readout and see all at once the weight, water %, fat % etc. It cycles through them. But the indicator of what number means what is very tiny, so really you have to remember that fat comes first, water comes next and so on. Yes it's easy to learn after a few tries, but it's annoying that the indicators are so tiny.
Also, it cycles around three times and then vanishes. With most of my other scales you stand on it and the numbers show until you get off. That gives you time to write them down. here you have to write really quickly - because if you miss something after that third try, you're out of luck. That seems to be a bit frustrating and nonsensical to me.
But still, this is by far the best scale I've found - that gives me exactly what I want to know, with accurate numbers, and it's cheaper than others in the same category! What more could I want in life!

Emjoi AP30 Body Fat Monitor Review

Emjoi AP30 Body Fat Monitor
Average Reviews:

This device is an aid to anyone wanting to keep track of their body fat. I got it because I need to lose some serious body fat :D
What I like:
++ You can measure individual sections of your body
++ It's much more accurate that body fat scales
++ It has a "history" so you can access your previous readings
What I don't like:
++ It's a little hard to get used to holding it in the beginning, but you can get the hang of it if you practice!
Overall: I'd say, if you are concerned about your body fat, make the investment.

Handy for monitoring the progress of dieting and exercise, this device measures body fat by emitting a beam of infrared light. Because muscle absorbs light and fat reflects it, the monitor records the amount of the light reflected back, calculates the percentage of fat in the body part being scrutinized, and instantly displays the result on a LCD screen. It will also recall from its memory a user's previous reading. Programmable by age, height, weight, and gender, the monitor compares a user's results to the standard minimum/maximum range of body fat for others with those factors. It operates on one 9-volt battery (included), weighs just 2.9 ounces, measures 4 by 2 by 1.6 inches, comes in a padded travel/storage case, and carries a one-year warranty against defects. --Fred BrackInstantly measures fat percentage of any part of bodyEmits infrared light beam and records amount of light reflected back by fatMonitors progress of dieting and exercising by showing previous readingCompares results with standard based on age, height, weight, genderOperates on one 9-volt battery (included)

FatTrack GOLD Digital Body Fat Caliper with FREE MyoTape Review

FatTrack GOLD Digital Body Fat Caliper with FREE MyoTape
Average Reviews:

I just got this thing and I'm happy with it in general, but there is a reference to an "IMPROVE YOUR MEASURING SKILLS" guide that is not included. It is impossible to get reliable results with this tool without a diagram of where to get the measurements. Just saying chest, abdomen, thigh is ridiculously unclear.
It is also somewhat difficult to learn how to pinch fat only. The first few times you are likely to get crazy results.
I was able to find this manual page on the internet:
http://www.accufitness.com/products/fattrack_pro_manual2.html
It cleared up most of my issues.

Skin Fold Caliper Review

Skin Fold Caliper
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a very accurate method of tracking body composition changes and the Slim Guide Skin fold Caliper with the Booklet is a GREAT tool for doing this. I have used a few tools over the decades and for the price...this is a great tool!
The booklet DOES give you answers for 1, 2 and 4 location tests instantly without any complex math. (see P.S. at bottom.)
This is best used by taking measurements over a period of time and tracking changes. If your interest is simply to monitor your body composition over time for general health, once every one to three months is a good interval. If, on the other hand, you have a specific goal or are in an intensive nutrition/training cycle, you may wish to track once a week.
If you are looking to lose weight (by losing excess fat) ...measuring Lean Body Mass and Body Fat is the only way to insure you are not losing muscle and water.
Many diets cause massive losses of water and muscle (very low calorie and low carbohydrate diets for example)...leading to a quick regain of pounds at some point. If you are on a diet program, and nobody is measuring your Lean Body Mass and Body Fat, you simply do not know what your body is doing.
So you know my credentials, I have been involved in health and fitness for over 20 years as a Body Builder, Body Sculptor, Trainer, Consultant, Coach and many other positions in the field. I am currently the Director of Personal Success Now.
For the best accuracy with this...
You should have the same person take the measurements at the same time of day. You should take your body weight (needed to determine Lean Body Mass and Body Fat) on THE SAME SCALE at the same time of day every time. The first time, you should measure how far down the Biceps and Triceps you take the measure and make a note. Make a picture diagram of where you take the other two measurements (below the shoulder blade and the side of the waist.) There are directions and diagrams to help you in the book, so don't worry about a thing.
Also, note what cloths you were wearing when you weigh yourself on the scale...always wear them for the weigh-in. Take a photograph of yourself now!! It is very helpful to see images of yourself at 30% bodyfat, then at 25%, then at 20%, then at 18%! If you feel shy, take them yourself in front of a mirror!
You will be glad you did. Just trust me on that.
If the program you are following is not giving you results in three weeks, something is not right. Get some help from a knowledgeable and qualified trainer. They can help you shorten the time it takes to reach your goals and be Your Personal Best.
Always ask potential program managers/trainers how they will help you achieve your goals. If they will not be using these components to help you...consider finding someone else:
1) Food and Nutrient intake monitoring
2) Cardiorespiratory Training
3) Resistance Training
4) Personal Assistance including Body composition monitoring
Additionally, if you are looking to lose body fat, you should consider removing foods with flavorings, colorings, additives, and preservatives from your diet at this time, as clinical tests have demonstrated that some of these can adversely effect bodyfat mobilization (i.e. fat burning) and some even enhance fat storage and stimulate the appetite.
Wishing you Personal Success Now!
P.S.
It is important to know up front that you will need another person to help you if you wish to get the most accurate results using this method of body composition monitoring. To more accurately determine your Lean Body Mass and Body Fat, you take caliper measurements from 1, 2, 3, 4, or 7 (or even 9) locations on the body. 2 of these are from behind: Just below your shoulder blade and the back of your arm (which you can reasonably do alone.) There is an option to use a measurement from only one location (front of the arm) to determine bodyfat, however this is not as accurate as taking it from multiple (3+)locations.
There are on-line calculators that will allow you to use a 3-site measurement that 1 person can do alone. Here is one such: linear-software.com/online.html. Since this is based on a mathematical calculation, you can do it yourself if you are interested...here is the information:
The 3 Skin fold sites required for Men are:
Chest, Abdomen, Thigh;
The 3 Skin fold sites required for Women are:
Triceps, Suprailiac, Thigh.
There are illustrations on the website given above.
You must determine body density:
Body Density for Men:
1.1093800-(0.0008267*(sum 3 skinfolds))+(0.0000016*(sum 3 skinfolds)^2)-(0.000257*age)
Body Density for Women:
1.0994921-(0.0009929*(sum 3 skinfolds))+(0.0000023*(sum 3 skinfolds)^2)-(0.0001392*age)
To Calculate Body Fat %:
(457/Body Density)-414.2

Robic Pedometer with Body Mass Calculator Review

Robic Pedometer with Body Mass Calculator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I just ordered this pedometer and discovered that not only does the step function not work accurately (it said I went about 3 steps for every one actually taken), but the fat % & BMI calculators were way off base. I had my fat % done recently by a fitness trainer and it was at least 10% points off. I realize that it won't be 100% accurate and could vary by a couple of % points, however 10% is unacceptable. I shipped the item back the same day I received it and will stick to a basic pedometer without all the fancy features that can accurately measure how many steps I actually DO take. Don't waste your money or your time on this product!

Omron Body Fat Analyzer Review

Omron Body Fat Analyzer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Omron HBF-306 is very simple to use. Because it uses electrical resitance and calculated "wing span" to measure BF%, it's possible (due to differences in arm length) that your reading may not be 100% accurate compared to a clinical "immersion" test. However, it is definitely consistent! I also have caliper type pinchers and found them too inconsistent (unless you can pinch the same exact spot each time).
With the Omron HBF-306, you can easily track changes in your body fat % as you progress through your fitness training. You'll be able to easily tell if your losing fat and/or gaining muscle by monitoring your BF% along with your weight. Check your weight and body fat % first thing in the morning for the most consistent readings. I highly recommend it.

Omron HBF-306C Fat Loss Monitor, Black Review

Omron HBF-306C Fat Loss Monitor, Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I never buy anything without doing research on what to buy first. If you read about BMI analyzers on About.com it not only recommends this as one of their top 3 picks over ANY kind of body fat analyzer, but it also explains why some people didnt get the results expected on these comments...because of user error.
Most admit to using this first thing in the morning.
It says on about.com never to do that. For accurate readings, use 3 hours after a meal, never first thing in the morning, (you are dehydrated then) never use when dehydrated, but you should use after emptying your bladder. (remember it's guaging what percent of you is muscle vs water so you want your body water to be balanced and normal...not too low with dehydration, not too high with a full bladder.) Also it's best to use this, or any monitor, when unclothed if possible. Ive found that part not to matter that much as everyone at my office borrows this sometimes and, because bare workers would be awkward, we've found it to read accurately clothed. :-)
Also, if you have a very high muscle mass and a very low BMI set it on "athlete" for an accurate reading. So yes, even bodybuilders CAN use it...you just have to know how.
This explained those who had problems and the unbiased rating on the aformentioned website (and others) states that this is WAY more accurate than calipers...made me buy it. I"d used it before at the gym and it was always great. But before I purchase on my own, I learn.
I use mine often and it is right on target as to what's going on with my body. A handheld non-electronic (or even electronic if it's the kind you place ON your fat) caliper will vary if you do not measure the EXACTLY in the same place each time and squeeze to the exact resistance. You avoid that common error via this latest technology. This has the latest.
I bought this one because or reading about what technology works the best from consumer tests by the experts. And I am happy with my purchase.
As an aside, I also discovered the scales that do fat testing through your feet are not as accurate as this method of testing either, even the Omron scale didnt test for accuracy as well as this Omron fat tester.
So I thought I'd share what i found in my week of research prior to purchase.
I love this body fat analyzer and my friends who have used it got their own as well. If you are bloated, your scale can't tell you why your weight is up. This can. And some days, I thank it for that!

The Omron HBF-306C Body Fat Analyzer measures your body fat with a gentle, micro electrical current -- don't worry, you won't feel it. The key to long-term exercise success is accurate body fat composition measurement. This handheld body fat analyzer is an affordable and easy way to measure your body fat in the privacy of your own home. After inputting the data, a measurement can be started by simply holding the grip electrodes and pressing the start button. And since the analyzer is built with a nine person profile memory, each member of your family or team can track the success of their individual exercise routines. The HBF-306C features two modes -- athlete and normal -- for accurate results. The device is a breeze to use, and it returns measurement results in seven seconds for both Bi method (Bioelectrical Impedance Method) and BMI (Body Mass Index). The unit displays the measured value of your body fat percentage through the BMI method, and indicates the body mass in for ranges from low, normal, high, and very high according to the BMI value.
What is the Bioelectrical Impedance Method? Muscles, blood vessels and bones are body tissues having a high water content that conduct electricity easily. Body fat is tissue that has little electric conductivity. The Body Fat Analyzer sends an extremely weak electrical current of 50 kHz and 500 µA through your body to determine the amount of fat tissue. This weak electrical current is not felt while operating the Body Fat Analyzer. The Bioelectrical Impedance Method safely combines the electric resistance with the distance of the electricity conducted. Correct posture and consistent measuring conditions need to be maintained for the best results.
Operating the Analyzer To use the HBF-306C you must first set your personal datYou must first select between the Normal and Athlete modes. To determine if you should select Normal or Athlete, you must calculate your FIT index by using the following formula:
FIT Index = Frequency x Intensity x Time
Frequency is a single digit number from one to five that represents your frequency of exercise. If you exercise daily or almost daily, then use the number five; three to four times per week use four; one to two times per week use three; a few times per month use two; and for less than once a month use one. If you workout vigorously, then you use the number five to represent your intensity level; if you workout with moderate or light effort, use the number four.
Meanwhile, time is a single digit number from four to one that represents the duration of your workout. If you exercise for 45 minutes or more, then use the number four; 30-44 minutes use three; 15-29 minutes use two; and for less than 15 minutes use one. For example, if you run five times a week for 30 minutes, your FIT index would be 75 (5 x 5 x 3 = 75) and you would select the Athlete setting. If your FIT index is greater than 60, you should select the Athlete setting. Any number below would demand a normal setting.
After determining your FIT index and selecting between the Athlete and Normal setting, the remaining personal data is very straightforward. Simply enter your height, weight, age and gender. When all the data is fixed and stored, the analyzer screen will display "Ready," and you'll be ready to take your first body fat measurements.
Note: For the following cases, the body fat percentage measured by this unit may significantly differ from the actual body fat percentage.
Children in a growth stage
Elderly people and post-menopausal women
People with a fever
People who have swelling
Patients with osteoporosis who have very low bone density
Bodybuilders or professional athletes
Patients undergoing dialysis

Q&A - Fitness Monitors What is the Bioelectrical Impedance Method? Bioelectrical Impedance (BI) is considered one of the most accurate and accessible methods of screening body fat. Muscles, blood vessels and bones are body tissues having a high water content that conduct electricity easily. Body fat is tissue that has little electric conductivity. The monitor sends an extremely weak electrical current through your body to determine the amount of fat tissue. Theweakelectrical current is not felt while operating the Body Fat Analyzer. The monitoris calculated by a formula thatincludes five factors; electric resistance, height, weight, ageandgender. What is visceral fat? Visceral fat is located around the organs. Too much visceral fat is thought to be closely linked to increased level of fat in the bloodstream, which can lead to common conditions such as high cholesterol, cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Sedentary life style causes excess visceral fat, and exercise can reduce it quicker than subcutaneous fat (fat located under skin). What is resting metabolism? Resting metabolism is the energy to maintain vital functions and it counts 60 to 70% of total energy consumption. Knowing your resting metabolism can help your dietplan. If you can increase daily activity while keeping food intake at resting metabolism level, you can lose weight. What is skeletal muscle? Skeletal muscle is muscle attached to the bones that is used to move the body. If you do weight loss without exercise, you may lose skeletal muscle. Skeletal muscle is important to maintain your resting metabolism as well as your functionality. Monitoring skeletal muscle during weight loss is key to avoid weight rebound in the future.
